Why aluminum is ideal for outdoors
Aluminum possesses characteristics that make it naturally suitable for outdoor environments. Unlike other metals, when it comes into contact with air and humidity, it spontaneously creates a protective oxide layer that protects the material from corrosion.
This means that, even after years of exposure, it does not tend to rust as untreated steel can. For this reason, it is chosen for: outdoor tables and chairs, pergolas, fixtures, ventilated facades, or structures exposed to the elements.
Does aluminum rust?
The answer is simple: No.
Rust is a phenomenon typical of iron and unprotected steels. Aluminum does not produce rust because it does not contain iron in the quantity necessary to develop it. Over time, it can oxidize superficially, but this oxidation is invisible and, instead of damaging the material, it protects it. It is precisely this characteristic that makes it one of the most durable metals for outdoor use.
Do sun, rain, and humidity ruin it?
Under normal conditions, no. Aluminum resists rain, humidity, frost, sun, and temperature changes without problems.
Naturally, durability also depends on the quality of the processing and finishing. A good powder coating further increases protection and keeps the color stable over time.
But then why do some aluminum structures bend?
Here arises a very common misconception: many people confuse lightness with fragility. In reality, the resistance of a product depends above all on: sheet metal thickness, design, structural reinforcements, and assembly quality.
There are inexpensive products that use very thin sheets and are not very stable. There are, however, products designed with adequate thicknesses and internal reinforcements that maintain high rigidity while retaining all the advantages of aluminum. It is therefore not the material that makes the difference, but the way it is designed.
How long does aluminum furniture last?
With good design and minimal maintenance, aluminum furniture can easily last for decades. It does not require periodic treatments like wood and does not need the typical maintenance of iron. In most cases, a simple cleaning with water and neutral detergent is enough.
